Health Symposium Foster Collaborations and Raise Awareness of Important Health Issues

Updated: Feb 4, 2020

Did you know that signs of a cardiovascular disease can be different for women compared to men?

It is important for women to educate themselves and others about heart disease signs, symptoms, and cardiovascular disease progression that women face.

" Women have long been treated as if they were males without consideration to the differences between the sexes. But men and women have different risks for heart disease. . . Our goal is to raise awareness about the importance of women's health research and foster collaborations." -Stella Goulopoulou, PhD

The Department of Physiology and Anatomy at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) in Fort Worth, Texas, conducted the 2nd annual Women's Cardiovascular and Brain Health Symposium (#WCBH2020) on January 31, 2020.

Symposium Goals:

  • Promote research addressing women's cardiovascular and brain health

  • Provide the opportunity for students and postdoctoral fellows to present their work

  • Foster regional and local research collaborations

  • Raise awareness about the importance of women's health research

Having the opportunity to present my brain health research on glaucoma as a trainee amongst my graduate school peers and scientist mentors was a very rewarding experience.

The speakers, Dr. Keisa Mathis (UNTHSC) and Dr. Margie Davenport (University of Alberta) did an amazing informative talk about their lab's research on "Sex Differences in Autoimmune-induced Hypertension" and "Pregnancy: Baby Steps for Cardiovascular Health!".

The keynote speaker, Dr. Farida Sohrabji, Regents Professor and Interim Department Head of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics at Texas A&M University College of Medicine presented her lab's work on "Gut-brain Axis: Implications for Stroke Pathophysiology and Therapy".

The symposium committee did an excellent job in creating a Community Discussion Panel that was moderated by UNTHSC Public Health graduate student, Ms. Shaince Roberts. The panel members were (1) Dr. Shanna M. Combs, Ob/Gyn Clerkship Directer at TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine, (2) Dr. Sreenivas Gudimetla, Cardiologist at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital, and (3) Mrs. Briana Harris-Henderson, Founder and President of LetsTalkPPCM. (Peripartum cardiomyopathy- PPCM)

I enjoyed learning about what we can do as future healthcare professionals and biomedical scientists in advocating for women's health and well-being. With 6 trainee oral presentations and 18 trainee poster presentations, the WCBH2020 symposium was immersed with valuable knowledge from providers of biomedical research as well as providers of healthcare and public health delivery.

Overall the Women's Cardiovascular and Brain Health Symposium was a success thanks to the the WCBH Organizing Committee Chair, UNTHSC Assistant Professor Stella Goulopoulou, PhD and the WCBH Organizing Committee.
