Succeeding as a PhD student in the North Texas Eye Research Institute at University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is rewarding and challenging. Thanks to the UNTHSC Community Garden, I can reset my mind and continue thriving as an amazing doctoral student.
History of THE UNTHSC Community Garden:
The UNTHSC Sustainability Committee founded a subcommittee in 2012 to begin and manage a community garden here on campus. Mrs. Sandy Bauman is the Sustainability Coordinator and Mrs. Donna Honkomp is the Community Garden Administrative Associative.
Goals of the Community Garden:
1. Promote Health and Nutrition
2. Provide Educational Opportunities 3. Enhance Community Engagement\
4. Team Building
5. Be Stewards of the Environment
Benefits of the Community Garden:
Volunteering at the UNTHSC Community Garden has given me the opportunity to eat healthier and grow food to serve the Fort Worth communities by providing healthy alternatives. I have learned about food production and nutrition, how to beautify spaces, and reduce the heat island effect (occurs in built environments where the temperature is higher than in rural surroundings).
Take time to find positive activities in your community to participate in and make a difference in the lives of others.
